School Programs

Al Thuraya Astronomy Center is geared towards promoting astronomy in an exciting manner, connecting us with our universe. Through our school programs, we encourage and provide opportunities for students to enhance their creative thinking and develop their knowledge and skillset in the fields of astronomy and space sciences for a better future of our nation.

Space is for everybody. It’s not just for a few people in science or math, or for a select group of astronauts. That’s our new fronteir out there, and it’s everybody’s business to know about space.

We start the program with the story and tour of our center, the Space Ship. We will take you through different areas of the center looking at the different ways in which we observe and study our universe, where we even showcase meteorites from our solar system that is around 4.5 billion years old. following the tour, you will witness a special immersive, full-dome show about the universe in the planetarium. The activity will be brought to an end with observation through our powerful and hi-tech telescope when we will be witnessing celestial bodies as they beautifully move across the sky.

Intro to Astronomy

All the stars, planets, and galaxies that can be seen today make up just 4% of the universe. The other 96% is made of stuff astronomers can’t see, detect or even comprehend. This program is geared towards looking at a very basic element of our universe, the size of things, which makes us reflect on a much grander picture.

We start the program with a talk on the size of things out there in the universe, trying to put things into perspective with a glance at how we pale in comparison to even comprehend, coupled with short films to visually represent the information. This is then followed by a special immersive, full-dome show about our solar system and the wonder that lie beyond Earth. Finally, using our telescope, we will observe celestial objects.

Day at the Center

We start the program with a talk on space exploration, what we have achieved, what we plan on doing, and what the future of space exploration is expected to be, coupled with short films to visually represent the information. This is then followed by a special immerseive, full-dome show about our plans of going back to the moon and the challenges it presents. We will then be taking a tour around the center to look at the different aspects in which we are exploring the universe, whether it is through optical telescopes or by the radio frequencies that are emitted from the edges of our universe. Finally, we will practically observe the sun through a special solar telescope.

Stargazing in the Desert

If you have ever had the opportunity to really observe the night sky, you have surely wondered about the vastness of the universe. Astronomy is obviously the oldest and most popular of space hobbies. Even the occasional backyard skywatching by the unaided eye or a small telescope can be a marvelous experience. Presenting this in the clear desert skies changes the expirence entirely, considering that most people have no idea what it is like having lived in cities all their lives.

We start the program with an introduction to astronomy, followed by stories in the sky, decoding the night sky with a powerful laser, and practical uses of astronomy. We will then open the floor for a Q&A session, where the guests will have an opportunity to ask the astronomer questions. Finally, we will be observing celestial objects through our hi-tech telescopes.

  • Introduction to Astronomy
  • Stories in the Sky
  • Decoding the Night Sky Constellations
  • Stargazing Session
  • Discussing Practical Uses of Astronomy
