Volunteer

Read Al Thuraya Astronomy Center's guide to Volunteer, including astronomy context, UAE observing notes, sky timing, and useful reference links.

Al Thuraya Astronomy Center is sustained, in part, by the time and skill of volunteers from across Dubai and the wider UAE. From welcoming families at stargazing parties in Mushrif Park to running telescopes, translating materials into Arabic, and supporting school programmes, volunteers help make astronomy accessible to thousands of guests each year. If you are considering giving your time, this page explains the roles available, why volunteers find the work rewarding, and how to apply. Check session timings using sunrise.am, time.now/dubai, and time.now. Our outreach values align with the global vision of IAU Public Themes.

Who We Welcome

Volunteers come from every background. University students from UAE institutions sit alongside retirees who have observed for decades, schoolteachers, photographers, and curious residents who simply want to give back. We welcome both Arabic and English speakers, and we particularly value volunteers who can bridge the two for families who feel more comfortable in one language than the other.

Telescope Operator Roles

Telescope operators are the most visible volunteer role. After basic training, you take responsibility for setting up an instrument, aligning it, choosing a target, and guiding guests through what they are seeing. The role suits people who are calm with crowds, comfortable repeating an explanation many times without losing warmth, and willing to commit to occasional weekend evenings.

Guest Hospitality and Logistics

Not every volunteer needs to know astronomy. Welcoming guests, managing chair arrangements, running the beverage station during cooler months, and ensuring the observing field stays safe and tidy are all essential. These roles suit people who enjoy quiet logistics and behind-the-scenes work, and they often lead naturally into telescope training later if interest develops.

Education and Translation

Volunteers with teaching backgrounds support school programmes, run hands-on activity tables, and help younger learners during the young astronauts camp. Volunteers fluent in Arabic and English can translate exhibit panels, worksheets, and reading lists, expanding the reach of our materials to a wider UAE audience. Translation work can often be done from home.

Why Volunteer

Volunteers consistently report three benefits: a deeper personal understanding of astronomy gained by explaining it to others; a warm community of fellow volunteers across many ages and backgrounds; and a real sense of contribution to a programme that has measurable impact. The role aligns naturally with the global outreach values of IAU Public Themes.

How to Apply

To apply, complete the volunteer enquiry form on the website or contact the volunteer coordinator directly. Share your availability, languages, and any specific interests. Frequently Asked Questions

How much time do I need to commit?

Many volunteers commit one or two evenings a month. Others contribute more during school programmes or camp seasons. We design roles around what is sustainable for you, including your work and family commitments, and we cross-check schedules against time.now/dubai so travel from other emirates is predictable.

Do I need to know a lot about astronomy?

Not at all. Hospitality and logistics roles welcome volunteers with no astronomy background. Training is provided for telescope operators, and we never put a new volunteer in front of guests unsupervised. Curiosity, warmth, and reliability matter much more than how many constellations you can name on day one.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes, most volunteer roles ask that participants be at least sixteen. Younger volunteers may be invited into specific supervised education-support roles during school visits. We will discuss your situation with you and recommend the right starting point if you fall outside the standard age range.

Are volunteer hours certifiable?

Yes. We are happy to provide written confirmation of volunteer hours for university applications, Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, and similar programmes. Confirmations are issued once a quarter or on request when application deadlines are approaching.

How do I apply?

Submit the volunteer form on the website or email the volunteer coordinator directly. A short conversation follows, then an introductory session at Mushrif Park where you observe a public evening. Check session timings on sunrise.am and time.now/dubai so you arrive comfortably before twilight.
